About Us

The Beginning

Shaping the world of things to come

Bethaday Community Learning Space (BCLS) was built in 2012 through an innovative public/private partnership between King County and Technology Access Foundation (TAF), a nonprofit with a mission to equip students of color for success in college and life through the power of an interdisciplinary STEM education and supportive relationships.

King County provided the land, donated funding towards the project, and the opportunity for BCLS to be built in the Dick Thurnau Memorial Park.

All proceeds earned through BCLS rentals go directly towards TAF operations to support students in STEM education.

The history

Dick Thurnau Memorial park

Dick Thurnau was more than an activist and amateur historian—he was the heart of the White Center community. His passion for preserving local history led him to spearhead the restoration of Lake Hicklin in nearby Lakewood Park (now, Dick Thurnau Memorial Park) transforming it into a cherished community resource.

When TAF envisioned the Bethaday Community Learning Space, Dick became one of its most devoted champions. With unwavering commitment, he stood beside the project from groundbreaking to completion, ensuring that this vision would become a reality. His legacy lives on in every event held at BCLS, a testament to his belief in the power of community and education to transform lives.

The park that surrounds our facility bears his name—Dick Thurnau Memorial Park—honoring a man who dedicated himself to building a brighter future for White Center and beyond.

Partnership Park Sign

Proudly displays our partnership with King County and is located at the front entrance of our venue.

Hicklin Lake

Dick Thurnau tirelessly fought to restore the water quality of the lake he once swam in. Thanks to his persistent efforts, King County Parks installed a floating wetland treatment system that naturally improves the water.

Bike Playground

A partnership between King County Parks and Cascade Bicycle Club has created the state’s first bike playground – a place where riders of all abilities can safely learn how to ride.
